POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Rider University softball team led almost throughout Game 2, but Marist scored the tying and go-ahead runs with two out in the bottom of the seventh to sweep the Broncs, 10-0 and 7-5, Saturday afternoon. With the sweep, the Broncs fall to 12-14, while the Red Foxes are now 6-6 in games contested and 6-10 when figuring in four forfeits at Canisius this past Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Red Foxes took Game 1 in five innings, scoring seven runs in the second inning and adding three more in the third to enact the mercy rule. Marist did its damage in the second on seven hits and a walk, while three Rider errors allowed Marist to add three unearned runs in the third. Meanwhile, Marist starting pitcher Calista Phippen limited the Broncs' offense to just one
Kaitlin Vazquez (Howell, NJ/Donovan Catholic) hit to lead off the third.
Rider scored first in Game 2, with
Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) reaching on an error and
Elena Gonzalez (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) and
Lani Moreno (Claremont, CA/Claremont) following with one-out walks.
Chaela Crowder's (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) sacrifice fly brought Marigliano home for a 1-0 lead. But Marist countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning on Kaley Coltrain's three-run home run.
Rider took a 5-3 lead with four runs in the second. Gonzalez plated the first with a bases-loaded walk, before Moreno drove in two with a single. Crowder capped the scoring with an RBI single. The Red Foxes cut the Broncs' lead to 5-4 on a single, two-base error and a fielder's choice in the fourth. Down to their last out, Marist got a game-tying RBI single from Coltrain and the next batter, Ali Milam, hit a walk-off home run to center.
Quotes & Notes
"Today was not a great display of what this team is actually capable of. Mental mistakes on defense and sitting on a few runs for five innings ultimately got the best of us and we still aren't able to just put a team away. Hopefully we can learn from our mistakes and come back strong next week."
