LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University women's tennis team lost an extremely-close match to hOURglass Rival Monmouth, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 2-5 (0-4 MAAC), while the Hawks improve to 3-5 (2-2 MAAC).
In doubles,
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) and
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro H.S. North) earned a 6-0 win over Ann Spurka and Nicole Gasser at the top flight. But
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and
Sarah Cheverie (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/National Sport School [Montana State]) were edged by Madison Mills and Lenien Jamir, 7-6 (2) and the Hawks took the point with a 6-1 win at No. 3.
In singles,
Leila Koster took a 6-3, 6-1, win over Spurka at No. 1, while Garcia made quick work of Gasser, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2.
Ally Garofoli (Springboro, OH/Springboro) also earned a 6-1, 6-0, win over Mills at No. 4, but the Hawks took the remaining singles matches to take the match victory.
Sydney Jeffrey (Port St. Lucie, FL/Lincoln Park Academy) and Cheverie each lost in three sets. Jeffrey won her first set against Jamir, 7-6 (5), before losing the second and third, 0-6, 0-2. Cheverie also won the first set, 7-6 (1), before dropping the second and third sets, both by 4-6 margins.
The Broncs return to action Thursday, when they host Delaware State at 2 p.m.
