LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced),
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and
Leila Koster each won singles matches as the Rider University women's tennis team defeated Hofstra, 5-2, Monday afternoon. The Broncs (1-1) defeated a shorthanded Hofstra (0-1) team that competed with four players.
The Pride took the doubles point with wins at the two flights contested, before Rider took three of four singles flights played and the Broncs also claimed wins at Nos. 5 and 6 by default. Melendez defeated Kayla Solangier, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 1, while Garcia defeated Isabella Tonuzi, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2. Koster made quick work of Desai Simran, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4.
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro HS North) and
Sarah Cheverie (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/National Sport School [Montana State]) were penciled in at Nos. 5 and 6 and took wins by default.
The Broncs return to action Wednesday, when they play host to Mount St. Mary's at 3 p.m.
