LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University men's soccer team erased a 2-0 deficit and again equalized down 3-2 to earn a point in a 3-3 tie against Garden State rival Saint Peter's Saturday evening on Ben Cohen Field. With the tie, the Broncs move to 5-5-2 (2-2-1 MAAC), while the Peacocks are now 5-7-1 (3-2-1 MAAC).
The Peacocks scored the first two goals of the game in quick succession in the 12
th and 14
th minutes. On the first, Matt Ellis beat his defender with a move to the goal line before crossing to Conlan Paventi for the finish. Ellis then scored a goal of his own off a turnover near midfield, taking it into the box, holding off a defender on his hip at the right post before finishing across the mouth of goal for the 2-0 lead. The Broncs cut the deficit in half in the 40
th minute as
Adel Al-Masude (Brussels, Belgium) was fouled just outside the 18-yard box and curled the resulting free kick over the wall and inside the near, left post to make it 2-1 at the half.
Rider evened the score at the 50:05 mark, as
Sergio Aguinaga's (Madrid, Spain/Antonio Dominguez Ortiz) free kick found
Tom Skrocki's (Havertown, PA) feet inside the box and the freshman connected for the first goal of his Rider career. But just 43 seconds later, Saint Peter's retook the lead. Tom Climpson scored from the right post off a long Fabian Schmid service from outside the opposite side of the box.
Rider again equalized less than six minute later, with Aguinaga starting and finishing a slick series of passes into the box for the shot on goal. Aguinaga passed to
Zaki Alibou (Meknes, Morocco/Meknes), who continued on to
Kevin Peprah (Boyds, MD/Northwest), who left it off for Aguinaga. The graduate student then finished low inside the right post. Neither team could find the back of the net in the remainder of the game and each settled for a point.
Quotes & Notes
"I think we deserved the win tonight. I think we deserved three points. But, listen, I thought we made a great comeback, coming back from down, 2-0, and we did it with three guys that haven't been getting a lot of playing time. So, from that standpoint, I was very proud of the effort and I thought, my God, there was probably four really, really good chances that we had to put it away. But that's the game." –
