Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Marist Defeats Men's Basketball, 76-67

First-half deficit too much to overcome

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ Allen Powell (Philadelphia, PA/La Salle College H.S.) scored a career-high 20 points and the Rider University men's basketball team whittled a once 34-point deficit down to seven, but the Broncs' comeback bid fell short to Marist, 76-67, Saturday night at Alumni Gym. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 4-11 (4-8 MAAC), while the Red Foxes improve to 8-6 (6-6 MAAC).

Marist made nine of its first 10 three-point attempts and 10-of-14 in the first half and built a lead of as many as 34 points, 41-7, at the 7:30 mark. The Red Foxes maintained a 51-22 lead at the halftime break. Dwight Murray, Jr. (Austell, GA/Pebblebrook [Incarnate Word]) and Ajiri Ogemuno-Johnson (Delta State, Nigeria/Monsignor Bonner) led the Broncs with six points apiece at the break, with Murray also grabbing six rebounds.

Down 31 with less than 15 minutes remaining, the Broncs used a 9-0 run to whittle the deficit down to 22. Four different Broncs scored in the run. Later, a 12-0 Rider run made it a single-digit game, 66-57, with 5:41 remaining. Powell and Jaelen McGlone (Cheltenham, PA/Cheltenham) each scored five points in the run. Rider twice cut the deficit to seven, but could draw no closer.

Quotes & Notes
"Poor start. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. We battled back, but when you dig yourself a hole like that, it's going to be hard to come back and win. Give the guys credit because they didn't give up, came back and competed and got it back under 10." – Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett
