Rider Athletics Mourns The Loss of Mario Ianni

Hall of Fame wrestler was four-time conference champion

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Rider University Athletics mourns the loss of Hall of Fame former wrestler Mario Ianni '75. Ianni was the 1975 Clair Bee Rider Athlete of the Year and graduated as the program's winningest wrestler at 43-7-1 in dual meets. For many years, he's been an active member of the Rider Athletics Hall of Fame Committee.

Ianni won his 126 pound weight class at the MAC Championships as a freshman and won at 134 as a sophomore, junior and senior. He was an East Coast Conference (ECC) Champion in the Broncs' first year in the new conference. He was a three-time National Qualifier.

One of only two Rider wrestlers to win four conference championships, his career mark of 43-7-1 represented a Bronc mark for victories (since broken).  As a junior, he starred in a 15-0-1 campaign, the first-ever-undefeated season for the wrestling program.

Ianni was the NJSIAA State Champion in 1970, becoming the first major recruit to Rider. He was inducted into the NJSIAA Region 5 Hall of Fame and the Edison High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Ianni Family will say its goodbyes to Mario on Saturday, August 15 at 4 p.m. at Morello Funeral Home in Easton, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in support of the Rider University Wrestling team.
