LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Women's Basketball's
Stella Johnson (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic) and Wrestling's
Jesse Dellavecchia (Great River, NY/East Islip [Binghamton]) have been selected Rider Athletes of the Month for March. It represents the third time both Johnson and Dellavecchia have earned the honor this year.
Johnson averaged 30.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 3.3 assists per game in leading the Broncs to a 3-0 mark in March, including a MAAC Regular Season Championship clinching road win at Monmouth and a MAAC Quarterfinal victory against Niagara in which she scored a MAAC Championship record 37 points. She was named the MAAC Player of the Year for the second-straight year and earned All-America Honorable Mention from both the Associated Press and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). She also earned Senior CLASS Award All-America Second Team recognition. Johnson led all NCAA Division I women's basketball players in scoring this season at 24.8 points per game.
Dellavecchia won four-straight matches at MAC Championships to become Rider's first-ever MAC Champion. He defeated Bloomsburg's Alex Carida, Buffalo's Michael Petite, Old Dominion's Larry Early and Missouri's Jarrett Jacques consecutively to earn the title and take the No. 4 seed at NCAA's. Dellavecchia won his final 13 matches of the year following a setback to nationally-ranked No. 2 Hayden Hilday of North Carolina State in the Southern Scuffle title bout. It was his only loss after the calendar turned to 2020 and he finished the year with a 30-2 record.
