Men's Basketball Earns 65-51 Road Win at Fairfield

Jordan scores 19, ties for program steals record

FAIRFIELD, CT – Senior Stevie Jordan (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan/API) posted team highs of 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals as the Rider University men's basketball team earned a 65-51 road win at Fairfield Sunday. With the win, the Broncs (17-12, 11-8 MAAC) sweep the regular-season series with the Stags (11-18, 7-11 MAAC).

The Broncs scored the game's first six points and never trailed in the first half. Rider held Fairfield to just one field goal in nearly the first 11 minutes of the game. Rider's lead swelled to as many as nine, 25-16, on a Willy Nuñez, Jr. (Orlando, FL/Oak Ridge [Florida International]) floater in the lane at the end of the shot clock with 4:40 left in the first half. But Rider would score just two more points in the half and Fairfield closed to within four, 27-23, at the break.

The Stags started the second half on a 7-2 spurt to take their first lead of the game, 30-29, at the 17:21 mark and extended to a 34-31 lead on a Vincent Eze lay-up at the 15:58 mark. Following six lead changes and two ties prior to the midway point of the half, Tyrei Randall's (Aurora, CO/St. Thomas More) three-pointer at the 10:05 mark sparked six-straight Rider points and the Broncs never trailed again. Already a double-digit lead following consecutive Frederick Scott (Munster, IN/Simeon [DePaul]) buckets in the paint with less than four minutes to play, the Broncs' lead swelled to its final 14-point margin from the free-throw line.

Quotes & Notes
"I thought our guys did a really good job on the free-throw line, Stevie in particular, 13-of-16. I thought defensively, we were excellent. We started to really lock down. We allowed them to take the lead and then we just buckled down and played possession-by-possession and started defending better and that's what got us through." – Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett

- Rider has won the last five games against Fairfield to cut the Stags' lead in the all-time series to 34-33. The series dates back to the 1951-52 season.
- The season sweep is Rider's second of the year, following its sweep of Marist. The Broncs go for a third sweep Wednesday against Manhattan. The only team to sweep the Broncs this season is Iona.
- With Sunday's results around the MAAC, Rider remains in fourth place at 11-8 in the league. Siena (13-5) continues to hold first place ahead of Saint Peter's (13-6). Monmouth (11-7) defeated Manhattan today to hold a one-game lead in the loss column over the Broncs (11-8). Iona and Niagara are tied for fifth at 9-9, ahead of Quinnipiac (9-10), which defeated Marist Sunday. Manhattan (8-10), Fairfield (7-11), Marist (6-13) and Canisius (5-13) round out the standings.
- The game was the final men's contest for Fairfield at Alumni Hall prior to planned renovations that will turn the current site into an 85,000-square foot convocation center with a 3,500-seat basketball arena with a projected opening set for 2021.
- Rider closes out regular-season action Wednesday, when it plays host to Manhattan. Prior to the 7 p.m. opening tip, the Broncs will honor their four-member senior class of Jordan, Tyere Marshall (Philadelphia, PA/Martin Luther King/Putnam Science), Kimar Williams (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution [Florida International]) and Nuñez, Jr. on Senior Night.
