LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Four Rider women's tennis players won at both singles and doubles as the Broncs opened the 2019-20 dual season with a 5-2 win over St. Francis Brooklyn Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs are now 1-0, while Terriers drop to 1-0.
Playing with just five players, the Broncs took the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 wins at Nos. 1 and 2.
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) and
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) defeated Jean-Na Koo and Gayathri Rajesh, while
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro H.S. North) and
Sarah Cheverie (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/National Sport School [Montana State]) defeated Alisa Handrugan and Dea Lako.
In singles play, Melendez, Garcia, Cheverie and Binder earned victories at the top four flights. Melendez took down Koo, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1, while Garcia blanked Handrugan, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2. Cheverie pulled out a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5) victory over Runsi Patro at No. 3, while Binder defeated Martina Radinovic, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4. In the final match contested,
Sydney Jeffrey (Port St. Lucie, FL/Lincoln Park Academy) fell in three sets to Lako, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-6 at No. 5.
The Broncs return to action Saturday, when they travel to Niagara for their MAAC opener. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
