PRINCETON, NJ –
Pablo DeCastro (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Francisco de Vitoria) scored on a penalty kick in the 60
th minute to cut the deficit in half, but the Rider University men's soccer team was edged at Princeton, 2-1, Wednesday night. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 1-2-0, while the Tigers are now 1-1-0.
Following a scoreless first half, the Tigers broke the deadlock with a Walker Gillespie goal in the 50
th minute. Less than a minute later, Princeton again found itself with a scoring chance, this time a two-on-one opportunity with Gillespie eluding an on-charging
Pablo Gatinois (Madrid, Spain/Lycee Francais de Madrid) to feed Kevin O'Toole for the tap in and a 2-0 lead in the 51
st minute.
In the 60
th minute, graduate student
Juan Carlos Garcia Gomez (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Francisco de Vitoria) drew a foul inside the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty kick that DeCastro finished to cut the deficit in half. In the 74
th minute, the Broncs clinically connected passes through the midfield and into the box before
Clement Bourret (Orleans, France/Lycee Jean Giraudoux) finished inside the left post past Princeton goalkeeper Jacob Schachner. But after the dust had settled and the Broncs had celebrated the equalizer, the linesman from the far sideline signaled offside.
A wild sequence in the 90
th minute nearly put the Broncs down two goals and just as nearly equalized. After Princeton couldn't put away a three-on-one opportunity on Gatinois, the Broncs came the other way and couldn't put away a pair of opportunities, ending the game with the Tigers on top, 2-1.
Quotes and Notes
"Very tough loss. We can't break down and give up two goals in a short span. But I can't question our effort. We were passionate. Dating back to last year, this was our eighth game of the last nine on the road, which is good because it makes you tougher. It will be nice to get back home." –
