LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Villanova won all five matches completed to defeat the Rider University women's tennis team, 6-0, Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs slip to 3-9, while the Wildcats are now 5-7.
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) and
Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) fell to Lindsey Evans and Sabrina Grigiorian, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles, while
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) fell by the same score at No. 2 to Lexi Denucci and Ellie Zimmerman as Villanova swept the doubles point.
The Wildcats took the top three singles flights to clinch the match. Canda fell to Claudia Althans, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1, while Melendez fell to Carina Burdick, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2. Garcia was defeated by Olivia Kapp, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3. With the match clinched, Binder's No. 4 singles match was halted with Sabrina Grigiorian up a set, 7-5, 1-2. The Broncs had just four players available, giving the Nos. 5 and 6 singles points to Villanova, as well.
The Broncs return to action Friday, when they play host to Fairleigh Dickinson. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
