POUGHKEEPSIE, NY –
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) pushed her No. 3 singles match to a third-set tie-breaker, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell to Marist, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 4-11 (1-4 MAAC), while the Red Foxes are now 7-14 (4-2 MAAC).
The Red Foxes swept the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2, while the Broncs defaulted at No. 3. Garcia dropped the first set against Sophie Moeller at No. 3 singles, before rebounding with a 6-3 win in the second. She led, 8-4, in a third-set tie-breaker before Moeller won the final six points to take the match, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (8).
Marist won the remaining three matches in straight sets.
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) fell to Julia Gabay, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1, while
Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) fell to Madison Price by the same score at No. 2.
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) was defeated by Chloe Lant, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4. Rider defaulted at Nos. 5 and 6.
The Broncs return to action Friday, when they play host to Niagara at 3 p.m.
