NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Three different Broncs recorded multi-hit games, but it was not enough as the Rider University baseball team fell on the road to Iona, 11-4, on Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at City Park.
The Broncs (13-22, 4-8 MAAC) have now dropped the third game in all four of their conference series this season, while the Gaels (8-26, 3-6 MAAC) earned their first league series win with the victory in Sunday's rubber match.
Iona wasted little time getting on the board as the hosts scored one run in the home half of the first. In the following half inning, Rider senior shortstop
Richie Tecco (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner) delivered an RBI single to right to tie the game at one.
The Gaels responded with five runs in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth to hold a 10-2 edge heading into the fifth inning.
At the plate, it was a day to remember for junior
Joe Simone (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) as he recorded his 100th career hit with a double in the top of the third.Â
CJ Hirschy (Toms River, NJ/ Toms River HS East) was saddled with loss in his first start of the season. Hirschy went one-plus innings and allowed four earned runs, while scattering six hits.
NOTES & QUOTES
"Not much to highlight from this one. Being down eight runs after four innings is difficult to recover from. Out of the bullpen,
Kyle Smith was excellent. He made three appearances this weekend.
Jordan Silverman and
Anthony Arneth also pitched well in relief. We have certainly dug ourselves a hole in the MAAC and we only have ourselves to blame."
– Rider Head Coach Barry Davis
- In relief,
Kyle Smith tossed two and two-thirds scoreless innings. He did not allow a hit and struck out one hitter.
-
Anthony Arneth also worked a scoreless inning out of the bullpen for Rider. He retired all three batters he faced, highlighted by registering one strikeout.
- Simone is the second Bronc this season to record his 100th career hit, joining classmate
Kyle Johnson.
- Tecco went 2-for-3 with a run scored, a walk and an RBI.
-
Mike Ionta also had two hits for the Broncs.
-
Jack Peterson went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Â
