LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) and
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) each contributed to two doubles wins and a singles victory as the Rider University women's tennis team defeated Coppin State, 4-2, Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs improve to 4-10, while the Eagles are now 2-9.
Melendez and Garcia won their No. 1 doubles match against Shariah Dunwell and Precious Udofe, 6-1, before the Broncs fell at No. 2. With neither team fielding a sixth player in its line-up, the doubles point came down to a super tie-breaker. Melendez and Garcia defeated Brittanie Cahua and Tinashie Gwaze, 10-8, to give Rider the 1-0 match lead.
Melendez then got past Dunwell, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 while Garcia also defeated Gwaze in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3.
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) defeated Udofe, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 to complete the victory. Coppin State won at No. 2, while taking No. 5 by default. No. 6 singles was not contested.
The Broncs return to action Tuesday, when they face MAAC foe Marist in Poughkeepsie. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
