LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) won at both singles and doubles, but the Rider University women's tennis team dropped its first match of the spring, 5-2, to Delaware State. Playing with just four players, the Broncs (3-8) split the two doubles matches contested, but forfeited at No. 3 to drop the doubles point. Without players in the Nos. 5 and 6 flights, Rider needed wins at the remaining four singles flights for the win, but Delaware State (4-6) took a pair of victories for the 5-2 victory.
Garcia paired with
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) to defeat Sophia Rachi and Anastasia Belkina, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles. She then got past Cassandra Boltman, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) also took a three-set singles victory, defeating Alina Polyvana, 6-7, 7-5, 7-6, at No. 4.
Melendez fell in three sets to Rachi at No. .1, 7-5, 2-6, 6-0, while
Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) also dropped a highly-competitive match to Anastasia Belkina, 6-4, 7-6, at No. 2.
The Broncs return to action Tuesday, when they play host to Villanova. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
