SACRAMENTO, CA – The Rider University baseball team fell to Sacramento State, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon at John Smith Field. The Broncs (5-11) dropped their third game in a row, while the Hornets (11-7) won their seventh straight contest.
Sacramento State broke open a 1-1 game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a three-run outburst. The host Hornets would add another run in the home half of the sixth to stretch the lead to 5-1.
In the top of seventh, Rider cut the deficit to just two thanks to RBI singles from
Chris Roan (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) and
Jack Peterson (Pittstown, NJ/North Hunterdon).
Sacramento State would add an insurance in the eighth to take a three-run lead and cap the scoring in the contest.
On the bump, sophomore
Vincent Vitacco (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) was saddled with the loss for the Broncs. Vitacco tossed five innings and allowed five runs (four of which were earned).

Chris Roan led the Rider attack offensively. Roan went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. It was his first career multi-hit game and the RBIs were his first two as a Bronc.

Kyle Johnson added two hits and scored two runs for Rider. It was Johnson's fourth multi-hit game of the spring. It marked the first time this season that he has scored more than one run in a game.

Frank DelGuercio made his debut on the mound for Rider in relief. He worked a scoreless inning.

Jack Peterson and
Joe Simone each had one hit apiece for Rider.
