Women's Basketball Outlasts Marist in MAAC Play

Lea Favre scored the eventual game-winning basketball late in the fourth quarter

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Four players scored in double figures to help lead the Rider University women's basketball team past visiting Marist, 70-64, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Broncs (13-9, 9-2 MAAC) won their second straight home contest and completed the regular-season sweep of Marist with the victory, while the Red Foxes, (17-8, 9-4 MAAC) saw their two-game road winning streak come to an end.

Trailing, 59-55, with under four and a half minutes left in regulation, Rider ripped off seven straight points capped by a three from junior guard Stella Johnson (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic). Johnson's trey gave the Broncs a 62-59 edge with under three minutes to play.

Marist would battle back to tie the game at 64 with 47 seconds left in the fourth quarter. On the ensuing possession, Stella found classmate Lea Favre (Vevey, Switzerland/Lycee Jeanne D'Arc) in the post for the eventual game-winning basket.

On the defensive end, Stella would steal an errant pass by the Red Foxes following Favre's bucket. Over the final 13 seconds of play, Stella would score the game's final four points at the foul line.

Stella led the charge for the Broncs with a game-high 23 points to go along with seven assists, while both Favre and senior points guard Lexi Posset (Pittsburgh, PA/Beaver Area) added 16 points apiece for the hosts. Off the bench, Bronc sophomore Daija Moses (Toronto, Ontario/Henry Street) scored a career-high 11 points.

NOTES & QUOTES
"That was a great MAAC basketball game. It was well played by two good teams that know what time of year it is. Young ladies stepped up on both sides. It was a game of runs and great defense stops. I'm really proud of our effort today especially on the defensive end. Lexi Posset might have played one of the better games of her career. It was just a great effort all the way around." – Rider Head Coach Lynn Milligan
