CONWAY, SC – Three Broncs tallied a hit, but the Rider University softball team was shut out by both Illinois-Chicago and Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Kickin' Chicken Classic. The Flames' Marley Hanlon spun a no hitter in UIC's 17-0 win in five innings, while the Chanticleers took a 5-0 victory.
The Flames scored five runs in the first inning and added nine more in the second to build an insurmountable lead. The cushion was much more than enough for Hanlon, whose only baserunner allowed came on an error in the third inning.
The Chanticleers scored two runs in each of the second and third innings to build a 4-0 lead and tacked on another in the sixth. Rider got its first hit of the day on
Melanie Wilkinson's (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) double in the top of the fifth and
Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, NY/Plainledge) added a single in the sixth. The Broncs threatened with
Gabby Bram's (Jackson, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) walk and a
Rachael Zeides (Woodbine, NJ/Ocean City) single to begin the top of the seventh. But following a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position, the Chanticleers got a strikeout and a pop out to secure the shutout.
