HAMDEN, CT –
Stevie Jordan (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan/API) scored a team-high 17 points, including the 1,000
th of his career, but the Rider University men's basketball team fell to Quinnipiac, 98-88, in overtime Tuesday night at the Peoples United Bank Center. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 12-13 (7-6 MAAC), while the Bobcats are now 13-10 (8-4 MAAC).
The Broncs jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the early going on the strength of four points apiece from
Anthony Durham (Philadelphia, PA/Abington/Putnam Science) and
Tyere Marshall (Philadelphia, PA/Martin Luther King/Putnam Science). But the Bobcats countered with a 13-0 run to take the lead.
The Bobcats' lead stretched to as many as eight and stood at seven, 31-24, with less than two minutes left in the period before the Broncs ended the half on an 8-0 run to take a 32-31 lead at the break.
Frederick Scott (Munster, IN/Simeon [DePaul]) and
Jordan Allen (Dover, DE/Dover) knocked down three's before
Devine Eke (Plainfield, NJ/Union Catholic [Maine]) ended the period with a steal and fast-break dunk.
Following four lead changes and two ties in the second half, the second at 58-58 with 6:47 remaining, the Broncs took the lead on Scott's bucket at the 6:33 mark and extended the advantage to as many as nine on a pair of
Dimencio Vaughn (New York, NY/Callaway/The Masters School) free throws with 49 seconds left. Jacob Rigoni connected on a three with 44 seconds remaining before Durham made one free throw before a Rider lane violation to push the lead back to seven with 24 seconds left. Tyrese Williams knocked down consecutive three's with 21 and nine seconds remaining, wrapped around 1-of-2 Durham free throws to make it a two-point game. Vaughn left the door open, making 1-of-2 free throws before Rigoni got the whistle on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws with 1.5 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, the Bobcats scored the first 10 points and didn't trail again. All told, the Bobcats' run covering the final 44 seconds of regulation and 2:30 of overtime was 22-3.
Notes
- The game was the 15
th in the all-time series with Quinnipiac. The Broncs now lead the series, 12-3, after seeing a seven-game winning streak against the Bobcats snapped.
- Rider had not lost an overtime game since Jan. 10, 2014, a double-overtime setback at Canisius. Rider is now 9-2 in overtime games under Head Coach
Kevin Baggett.
- With a bucket at the 16:11 mark of the first half, Jordan became the 37
th player in Rider men's basketball history to score 1,000 career points.
- Rider's five-game losing streak matches its longest in seven years under Baggett (Dec. 9, 2012 – Jan. 4, 2013).
- Rider led at the half for just the fourth time this season in 13 MAAC games.
- Rider returns to action Friday, when it plays host to Monmouth at 7 p.m.
Broncs by the Numbers
- Durham (16), Scott (15) and Marshall (12) joined Jordan in double-figures scoring.
- Jordan grabbed a season-high nine rebounds. Scott matched Jordan for the team lead with nine boards.
- Quinnipiac outshot Rider, 49.2 percent (32-65) to 40.3 percent (31-77) from the floor, including a 36.1 percent (13-36) to 29.6 percent (8-27) advantage from long range.
- Rider forced 18 Quinnipiac turnovers, including eight by point guard Rich Kelly.
- Jordan's 130
th steal pulled him into a tie for 13
th in program history with Mike Ringgold.

Ahmad Gilbert (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution [Minnesota]) scored nine points in eight minutes off the bench, making 4-of-5 attempts.
- Both teams grabbed 46 rebounds. The Broncs are now 0-5 this season when rebounds are equal and 3-10 when grabbing the same or fewer rebounds as the opposition.
- Entering the game 13
th in the nation at 8.9 steals per game, Rider had 11 steals today. Scott had a team-high three steals, while Jordan's one theft gives him 131 career steals, moving him into a tie for 12
th all-time at Rider with Derrick Lamar '85. Two more steals would move him into the top 10 (Charles Smith '96, R.J. Wicks '02 – 133).
- Rider outscored its opponent in the paint for the 12th time in 13 MAAC games, taking a 40-38 edge. The Broncs have now outscored league foes, 512-382, in the paint for an average of +10.0 points per game.
