PHILADELPHIA –
Jesse Dellavecchia (Great River, NY/East Islip [Binghamton]) and
George Walton (Franklin, NJ/Bound Brook) each won individual titles as the Rider University wrestling team finished second at the Keystone Classic on Sunday. 12 different Broncs reached the podium on the day, including a second-place finish from
Ethan Laird (Waterford, PA/General McLane) and third-place finishes from
Richie Koehler (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) and
Gino Fluri (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional) finished in third.
Dellavecchia won five-straight matches at 157 to take the title. He earned a tech fall over Duke's Eric Carter, before winning by fall against Sacred Heart's TJ Calas. He then earned a 10-3 decision over Franklin & Marshall's Noah Chan and an 8-2 decision against Virginia's Justin McCoy to advance to the championship bout against Appalachian State's Matt Zovstoski. Dellavecchia earned a 6-3 decision in TB2 to earn the championships.
Walton started his run to the title with a 14-5 major decision over Drexel's Owen Brooks. He went on to earn decisions against Virginia's Michael Battista (3-1), Penn's Jesse Quatse (9-4) and Appalachian State's Julian Gorring (5-2).
In addition to Dellavecchia, Walton, Laird, Koehler and Fluri,
Robert Cleary (Edison, NJ/Bound Brook [Rutgers]),
Dean Sherry (Brick, NJ/Brick Township),
Jonathan Tropea (Harrington Park, NJ/Saint Joseph (Montvale),
Ryan Cloud (Brookville, OH/Northmont),
Chris Wright (Harrisburg, PA/ Central Dauphin),
Travis Layton (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) and
Georgio Poullas (Canfield, OH/Canfield [Cleveland State]) also earned spots on the podium. Cleary and Sherry finished fourth at 141 and 174, respectively, while Tropea, Wright and Cloud each finished fifth at 125, 133 and 285. Layton was the sixth-place finisher at 149, while Poullas took seventh at 165.
The Broncs return to action Friday, Dec. 6, when they travel to Bloomsburg for a MAC dual. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
