Sher's Big Day Helps Volleyball Defeat Canisius on Saturday

The sophomore setter had a career-high 59 assists to go along with 21 digs in the four-set win

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Sophomore Anilee Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) and freshman Morgan Romano (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) both recorded double-doubles to lead the Rider University volleyball team past visiting Canisius, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action inside Alumni Gymnasium.
 
The Broncs (12-13, 9-4 MAAC) avenged a setback to the Golden Griffins (11-13, 8-4) earlier this season thanks to winning by scores of 27-25, 26-28, 25-15 and 25-19.
 
Sher was dominant in the middle for Rider as she dished out a career-high 59 assists to go along with 21 digs and three total blocks. Her 59 assists were the most by a player in the MAAC in a four-set match this season.
 
Romano continued to be a force for the Broncs. She had a match-best 25 kills to go along with 16 digs, two service aces and two total blocks.
 
Offensively, Morgan Koch (Bloomington, IL/Central Catholic) chipped in a career-high 14 kills, while Ali Ward (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) added 10 kills of her own.
 
Defensively, a season-high five Broncs had 10 or more digs. Senior libero Rachelle Runyon (Aliso Viejo, CA/Alisno Niguel) led the way on the backline for Rider with a season-best 30 digs.

- Rider has now won five matches in a row.
- The Broncs snapped a four-match losing streak to Canisius with the win.
- As a team Rider had 80 points, 65 kills, six service aces and a season-high 101 digs.
- The 101 digs were the most for Rider since the Broncs had 111 in a five-set match against Iona last October.
- Rider had 60 or more kills for the second match this year. Both instances came against Canisius. The 65 kills were the most for the Broncs since they had 70 versus Quinnipiac in September of 2016.
- On Tuesday, freshman Morgan Romano was named both the MAAC Rookie of the Week and the MAAC Player of the Week. It marked the second time this fall that she has earned both accolades in the same week.
 
BRONCS BY THE NUMBERS
- Morgan Romano recorded her team-leading ninth double-double of the year. It was her second straight double-double. She registered 20 or more kills for the ninth time this autumn. On the season, she now has 430 kills. That is the most by a Rider player since Jaclyn Levi had 439 in 2002.
- Runyon registered 20 or more digs for the 11th time this fall. Runyon now has 1,495 career digs. She is looking to become just the fifth player in program history to record 1,500 career digs.   
- In the middle, senior Evelyn Shanefield eight kills, one solo block and one block assist. Shanefield now has 260 career block assists which ranks third in program history.
- Danielle Blanco had 16 digs for the Broncs and Pamela Loh added 13.
 
UP NEXT
Rider closes out a busy weekend of home MAAC play on Sunday, November 3, with a match against Niagara that is slated to begin at 1:00 pm. The Broncs are looking to avenge a setback to the Purple Eagles earlier this autumn in Western New York.
