FAIRFIELD, CT –
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) and
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) won their No. 1 doubles match, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell to Fairfield, 7-0, Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 1-4 (0-2 MAAC), while the Stags are now 1-0 (1-0 MAAC).
Melendez and Garcia defeated Diana Prinos and Paulina Bakaite, 6-3, at the top doubles flight. But playing with just five, the Broncs fell at No. 2 and forfeited the third flight and the doubles point.
The Stags then took all five singles flights contested in straight sets. Garcia's match was the most competitive, but she fell to Prinos, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2.
The Broncs return to action Sunday, when they host Quinnipiac. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
