FAIRFIELD, CT –
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) won both of her matches, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell to Delaware State, 4-2, Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 1-5, while the Hornets are now 2-0.
The Broncs swept the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Melendez paired with
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) to defeat Cassandra Boltman and Lolita Kozina, 6-3, at No. 1, while
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro H.S. North) and
Sarah Cheverie (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/National Sport School [Montana State]) got past Anastasia Belkina and Iris Leder, 6-4, at No. 2. Both teams played with five players, meaning No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches were not contested.
Melendez bounced back from dropping the first set of her top singles match to Boltman, 6-3, to win the second and third sets, 6-0, 6-2. However, the Hornets took the remaining four singles matches to earn the victory. Binder was the most competitive in defeat, falling in three sets to Belkina at No. 3, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
The Broncs return to action Saturday, when they travel to Siena. First serve is scheduled for noon.
