FAIRFIELD, CT – Fairfield swept the Rider University men's tennis team, 7-0, Saturday afternoon in closer match than the final score would indicate. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 1-4 (0-2 MAAC), while the Stags are now 1-0 (1-0 MAAC).
The Broncs' top doubles tandem of
Pablo Salar Carrera (Barcelona, Spain/IES Jaume Balmes) and
Adrian Tsui (Roslyn Heights, NY/Roslyn) pushed Kaya Gore and Jonathan Olive-Blanco to the brink, but fell at No. 1 doubles, 7-6 (7). The Stags took the doubles point with 6-3 and 6-1 victories at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
A pair of Broncs pushed their singles matches to a third set.
Javier Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio Nuestra Senora de la Merced) fell to Olive-Blanco, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 2, while
Griffin Clark (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) fell to Allan Magid, 6-7, 6-4, 10-6, at No. 5.
Salar Carrera also played a strong match against Tyler Shibles at No. 1, but fell, 7-5, 7-6 (4).
The Broncs return to action Sunday, when they play host to Quinnipiac. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
