NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY –
Pablo DeCastro (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Francisco de Vitoria) scored the equalizer in the 67
th minute, but the Rider University men's soccer team fell at Niagara, 2-1, on a penalty kick in overtime Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 5-5-2 (2-2-2 MAAC), while the Purple Eagles improve to 5-8-1 (3-2-1 MAAC).
Following a scoreless first half, Niagara got on the board at the 49-minute mark with Absolom Solorio-Villalpando scoring directly off a corner kick to give the Purple Eagles a 1-0 lead. Rider responded with the equalizer in the 67
th minute, with DeCastro scoring his team-leading sixth goal of the year to knot the game at 1-1.
Less than three minutes into overtime, Niagara was awarded a penalty kick. Solorio-Villalpando went right, where Rider goalkeeper
Pablo Gatinois (Madrid, Spain/Lycee Francais de Madrid [Oregon State]) correctly guessed he'd go. Gatinois got a piece of it, but not enough to stop the shot, resulting in the golden goal for the Purple Eagles.
