LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Jordan Allen (Dover, DE/Dover) struggled through a rare off shooting night until his team needed him most. The redshirt sophomore guard buried a corner three with 57.9 seconds left in regulation to break a 65-65 tie and put the Broncs (7-7, 2-0 MAAC) on top for good in a 72-67 win over Quinnipiac (6-7, 1-1 MAAC), Saturday night at Alumni Gym. The connection was Allen's first of the game on his eighth attempt.
A game that featured 14 lead changes was tied for the 10
th time at 65-65 following a Cameron Young three-pointer with just over two minutes two play. But just over a minute later on the other end, a miscommunication on the Quinnipiac defense left Allen wide open in the left corner for the three.
Young converted on a broken play with 33.8 seconds left to cut the Broncs' lead to one.
Kimar Williams (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution [Florida International]) twice made 1-of-2 free throws, sandwiched around a
Stevie Jordan (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan/API) block on the defensive end, pushing Rider's lead back to three.
Rider fouled up three with 3.5 seconds left and Quinnipiac's Rich Kelly missed the front end of a 1-and-1.
Anthony Durham (Philadelphia, PA/Abington/Putnam Science) put the game out of reach with a pair of free throws with 2.4 seconds left.
Quotes & Notes
"Good game. Give Quinnipiac a lot of credit. I really like their team. I like the way they play. I like the way they share the ball. I thought our guys did a great job, especially down the stretch. We're still struggling to make some three's, so we've got to grind it out a little bit, but give our guys credit."
"Guys are stepping up when we need them to step up and help us to win these first two conference games."
"We just started to press a little bit, forced the tempo on them, not allow them to get into the half court and run offense against us. They had a couple of open looks, but when you're pressing, you're going to give up some things. They started taking some quick shots. Obviously they thought they were open and we were fortunate for them to miss them and to get the rebound."
– Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett
"There's definitely an adjustment with Dimencio being out. He's a big energy guy, big rebounding guy. Like Coach said, we're working on it every day. We've got to get better defensively. We've got to get better guarding the three-point line. But me and my guys every day in practice are working hard. Just continue to get better and keep working."
– Redshirt senior guard Anthony Durham
"I think I've progressed tremendously. Just having confidence and my coach putting confidence in me and my teammates putting me in the right position for me to be better and progress."
– Redshirt junior guard Kimar Williams
