POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Four different players scored in double figures as the Rider University women's basketball team knocked off host Marist, 68-58, on Wednesday evening in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action inside McCann Arena.
The Broncs (11-8, 7-1 MAAC) remained unbeaten on the road in conference play, while the Red Foxes (15-7, 6-3 MAAC) dropped their second straight home contest.
After the early minutes, Rider would never trail in the contest. The Broncs would stretch their lead to as many as 13 points early in the fourth quarter at 53-40 following a steal and score from junior
Stella Johnson (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic).
Down the stretch, Rider would knock down their free throws to hold on for the win. The Broncs shot over 63 percent from the field (7-of-11) and 77 percent (7-of-9) from the foul line over the final 10 minutes.
Stella and classmate
Lea Favre (Vevey, Switzerland/Jeanne D'Arc) paced the Bronc attack with 18 points apiece. Senior point guard
Lexi Posset (Pittsburgh, PA/Beaver Area) chipped in 14 points, while junior
Amari Johnson (Red Lion, PA/Dallastown) recoded her second career double-double with a 15-point, 15-rebound performance. Â
NOTES & QUOTES
"This is a nice win for us. To come into one of the toughest places to play in the league and get a win is big. I think defensively we did a nice job.
Amari Johnson stepped up and hit some shots early on to take the pressure off Stella. We did a good job of staying within the gameplan. We made some mistakes, but we were able to bounce back from them."
