LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University men's basketball team held an opponent to its fewest points in nearly four years in a 60-47 win over Manhattan Saturday night at Alumni Gymnasium. The Broncs improve to 10-7 (5-0 MAAC) in limiting the Jaspers (4-14, 2-4 MAAC) to the fewest points since holding Canisius to 46 points on Jan. 24, 2015.
An early 8-0 run gave Rider a double-digit lead at 20-9 with just under seven minutes to go in the first half and they'd never trail again. A 7-0 Manhattan run cut the Broncs' lead to four before Rider finished the half with buckets from
Dimencio Vaughn (New York, NY/Callaway/The Masters School) and
Tyere Marshall (Philadelphia, PA/Martin Luther King/Putnam Science) to take a 31-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Broncs shot 50 percent (12-24) in the opening 20 minutes.
Manhattan whittled the Broncs' advantage to six with 14:15 remaining, but could draw no closer in the second half.
Quotes & Notes
"Glad that we were able to pull out this game. I thought they did a good job trying to control the tempo. Certainly not the tempo that we want to play at. But like I said, give Steve and his team credit for trying to slow it down. We found a way to still maintain and execute when we needed to. It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win."
