Women's Tennis Falls in Season Opener to Lafayette

Garcia Wins First Career Singles Match

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Freshman Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) won her first-career singles match, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell to Lafayette, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon to open the 2018-19 season.

Playing with a line-up of just five players, the Broncs fell in both doubles flights as the Leopards swept the doubles point. Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) and Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) played a closely-contested match at No. 2, but fell to Grace Conrad and Meredith Block, 7-5.

Garcia defeated Conrad, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles to account for the Broncs' lone point in the match. The Leopards took Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 in straight sets and won at No. 6 by default.

The Broncs return to action Friday, when they play host to hOURglass rival Monmouth. First serve is slated for 3 p.m.
