Second Half Surge Sends LIU Brooklyn Past Men's Soccer

Blackbirds score three times in final 20 minutes

BROOKLYN, NY – LIU Brooklyn scored three times in the match's final 20 minutes to take a 3-0 victory Saturday over the Rider University men's soccer team. With the loss, the Broncs slip to 1-4-1, while the Blackbirds are now 3-3-1.

Following 70 scoreless minutes, the Blackbirds broke the deadlock at the 70:04 mark, when Rasmus Hanson finished in front off assists from Xavi Verdu and Guiseppe Barone. Just over nine minutes later, Frederik Mathisen finished on one touch off a cross from Marius Koss.

The Blackbirds added another insurance goal 90 seconds later, with Michael Gianino finding himself 1v1 with Rider goalkeeper Garret Potter (Lafayette, NJ/High Point) following assists Mathisen and Filip Nordstrom.

- Rider now leads the all-time series, 11-6-0.
- Rider won last year's meeting, 2-1, in double overtime on Mathis Catanzaro's (Montpellier, France/MHSC) golden goal. Catanzaro has yet to play this season due to injury.
- The Broncs were also without All-MAAC back Sylvain Coco (Nimes, France/University of Montpellier), who was serving a suspension following a red card last time out against Temple.   
- Raejae Joseph (St. Croix, USVI/St. Croix Education Complex), Alejandro Perez (New Milford, NJ/New Milford) and Mike Wherley (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) each made their season debuts off the bench.

Broncs By The Numbers
- Potter got the start in net for the Broncs, making a career-high six saves. He doubled his prior single-game high of three and eclipsed his prior total of five saves, made across three games.
- Rider took a 13-11 edge in shots. However, LIU had a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Broncs also took five corner kicks to the Blackbirds' two.
- Elliott Otmani (La Ciotat, France/Bonaparte) and Sergio Aguinaga (Madrid, Spain/Antonio Dominguez Ortiz) led the Broncs with three shots each.
