LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University men's soccer team played Fairleigh Dickinson to a 1-1 tie to open the 2018 season Friday night at Ben Cohen Field.
Elliott Otmani (La Ciotat, France/Bonaparte) scored on a penalty kick in the 11
th minute as the Broncs move to 0-0-1.
The Broncs were awarded the penalty kick in the 11
th minute after
Pablo DeCastro (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Francisco de Vitoria) was taken down in the box. Otmani calmly deposited the opportunity into the back of the net to stake the Broncs to a 1-0 lead.
Rider maintained the lead for nearly 70 minutes, before the Knights evened the score in the 80
th minute. Ahu Obhakhan headed in a cross off assists from Jacob Labovitz and Noah Chia. The Knights played the ball down the left sideline before crossing from near the goal line to Obhakhan in front.
Seven seconds later, Labovitz was sent off with a red card, leaving the Knights to play a man down the rest of the way. But the Broncs couldn't capitalize and the game ended in a draw.
Quotes and Notes
"I thought we were good for the first 35 minutes and then you could see where our lack of fitness really came into play. You could kind of see the air going out of the balloon, so to speak. I thought the first 30 minutes, maybe if Sergio's shot, the one that hit the post, that puts us up 2-0 and maybe that's the game right there. But it's kind of been our plan all along. We don't want to peak now. We want to peak in October or November. So the fitness part will come in time. I saw a lot of signs that I'd be encouraged about tonight." –
