NEW ROCHELLE, NY –
Rachael Zeides (Woodbine, NJ/Ocean City) led the Rider University softball team with three hits, but the Broncs fell at Iona, 2-1 (9 inn.) and 4-2, in a MAAC doubleheader Sunday afternoon. With the losses, the Broncs fall to 8-20 (1-5 MAAC), while the Gaels improve to 13-14 (5-1 MAAC).
After seeing her no-hit bid and shutout eliminated with an unearned run in the fifth inning of Game 1,
Elyse Cuttic (Easton, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) kept the deficit at 1-0 until the Broncs evened the score in the top of the seventh. Cuttic walked and pinch runner
Melanie Wilkinson (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) stole second. Wilkinson then scored on
Gabby Bram's (Jackson, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) single up the middle. But after a scoreless eighth inning, Iona's Jasmine Temple ended the game with a walk-off home run.
In Game 2, the Gaels struck for four runs in the fourth and that was all they'd need to come away with the victory. Rider wouldn't go down without a fight, however, scoring twice and putting the go-ahead run on in the seventh.
Sam Ward (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan) got the Broncs on the board with a home run to left, pulling her into a tie for the team lead with her fourth of the year. Wilkinson and Toni Niño (Adelanto, CA/Silverado) then singled and
Amanda Jordan (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) reached on a single to load the bases before Cuttic walked to force in a second run. But reigning MAAC Pitcher of the Week Alana Evans got her 12
th strikeout of the day to end the Rider rally.
