Softball Drops Pair of Close Games to Northern Kentucky, Central Connecticut

Chain leads Rider with three hits vs. Norse

CLEARWATER, FL – The Rider University softball team dropped a pair of close decisions Friday afternoon at the USF – Under Armour Showcase. The Broncs came back from down 5-0 to Northern Kentucky, but fell, 5-3, before holding 1-0 and 2-1 leads against Central Connecticut, but falling, 3-2, in eight innings. With the losses, the Broncs fall to 2-8 on the season.

Against Northern Kentucky, the Norse built a 5-0 lead with two runs in the first, two more in the second and another in the top of the third. Rider chipped away at the lead with single runs in the third, fourth and sixth, but came up short, falling, 5-3. Maddy Chain (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester City) plated Toni Nino (Adelanto, CA/Silverado) with an RBI single in the third, while Monica Clark's (Bryn Mawr, PA/Archbishop Carroll) single in the fourth scored Rachael Zeides (Woodbine, NJ/Ocean City) with one of her two runs scored on the day, the second coming on a Sam Ward (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan) single in the sixth.  

In the second game of the day against Central Connecticut, the Broncs scored first in the top of the first and, after the Blue Devils tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, retook the lead in the sixth. But CCSU would even the score and force extra innings, taking the game, 3-2, in eight innings.

- Emily Oltman (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief to keep the Broncs in the game against Northern Kentucky. She allowed just two hits and three walks, while striking out eight.
- Elyse Cuttic (Easton, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) got the start in the circle against Northern Kentucky, allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits in 2.1 innings. She struck out one.  
 
BRONCS BY THE NUMBERS
- Chain led the Broncs with three hits and an RBI against the Norse.
- Zeides and Ward added two hits apiece against Northern Kentucky, with Zeides scoring twice.
