Third-Quarter Run is the Difference For Women's Basketball in Loss to Navy

The Mids opened the second half on a 9-0 run and never trailed again

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – A 9-0 run to start the third quarter proved to be the difference as visiting Navy defeated the Rider University women's basketball team, 66-60, on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action inside Alumni Gymnasium.

The Mids (3-3) won their second straight contest, while the Broncs (3-5) saw their two-game home winning streak come to an end.

Navy broke open a two-point game with a 9-0 run over the first 90 seconds of the third frame. During the spurt, the Mids hit all four of their field-goal attempts and forced a trio of Rider turnovers.

The Navy lead would stretch to as many as 14 midway through the fourth before Rider turned up the intensity on the defensive end. With 45 seconds remaining, a trey from Bronc senior point guard Lexi Posset (Pittsburgh, PA/Beaver Area) brought the hosts within seven at 63-56.

On the ensuing possession, Navy would miss a pair of free throws. With time running down, junior Lea Favre (Vevey, Switzerland/Lycee Jeanne D'Arc) scored in the post to make it a five-point game at 63-58. Rider would get no closer as Navy would knock down their final three free-throw attempts to seal the triumph.

It was a balanced offensive attack for Rider as a season-high four Broncs scored in double figures. Both Favre and classmate Stella Johnson (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic) poured in 14 points apiece. Posset had a season-best 13 points after missing the previous four games due to injury, while junior Amari Johnson (Red Lion, PA/Dallastown) chipped in 10 points.

NOTES & QUOTES
"Today was not one of our better efforts this season. We started pretty solid defensively, but out shots weren't falling. We were just a little bit out of sync offensively. The ball just wasn't dropping today and that affected us defensively." – Rider Head Coach Lynn Milligan

- A game after not getting to the free-throw line, the Broncs went 11-of-14 at the line against the Mids.
- The Broncs shot a season-best 78.6 percent from the foul line and it marked the second time this year that Rider hit more than 10 free-throw attempts in a game.
- Navy has won all five meetings in the series history.
- Rider is now 2-2 at home this season.

BRONCS BY THE NUMBERS
- Favre has scored in double figures in back-to-back games. She hit 4-of-5 shots from the field and 6-of-8 attempts from the charity stripe. She also added six rebounds, two steals and one block.
