BURLINGTON, VT – The Rider University women's basketball team fell on the road to Vermont, 54-49, on Friday evening in non-conference action inside Patrick Gymnasium.
The Catamounts (1-0) avenged a setback to the Broncs (0-2) in Lawrenceville with the victory.
Trailing, 47-40, with 3:29 left in regulation, Vermont closed the game on a 14-2 spurt to secure the triumph. Down the stretch, the Broncs missed their final six shots from the field. Rider's lone points over the final three minutes of play came at the foul line from senior point guard
Lexi Posset (Pittsburgh, PA/Beaver Area). Â Â
With 49 seconds left in the fourth, Posset was fouled hard driving to the hoop. She would hit both free-throw attempts to tie the score at 49 apiece. Vermont scored on the following possession and grabbed a defensive rebound after a Bronc miss in the paint. The final three Catamount points in the game came at the foul line.
Offensively,
Stella Johnson (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic) led the charge for the Broncs. She poured in a game-high 23 points on 10-of-24 shooting. Posset added eight points for the guests, while sophomore
Daija Moses (Toronto, Ontario/Henry Street) had a career-high nine points on an efficient 4-of-7 shooting.
In the post, junior
Lea Favre (Vevey, Switzerland/Lycee Jeanne D'Arc) scored seven points and grabbed a career-best 13 boards for the Broncs.
NOTES & QUOTES
