Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Wagner Defeats Women's Tennis, 6-1

Melendez wins both of her matches

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJCyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) won both of her matches, but the Rider University women's tennis team was defeated by Wagner, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs move to 3-7, while the Seahawks are now 3-2.

Melendez paired with Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) to defeat Vedika Anand and Rina Baynes, 6-2, at the top doubles flight. But playing with just five players, the Broncs forfeited at No. 3 and the Seahawks won at No. 2 to take the doubles point.

Melendez battled to a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, victory over Anand at No. 1 singles. But the Seahawks took the remaining five singles flights, including a pair of three-set decisions. All five singles flights were highly-competitive. Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) fell to Baynes, 6-2, 1-6, 6-0, at No. 2, while Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) also fell in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 4.

Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and Sydney Jeffrey (Port St. Lucie, FL/Lincoln Park Academy) both fell in straight sets, but not before giving their opponents all they could handle. Garcia fell to Samantha Lugtu, 6-4, 6-4, while Jeffrey suffered a 7-5, 6-3, setback to Melanie Post.

"Cyd used her forehand as a weapon today. A well-fought match," said Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay. "I thought Amanda was going to going to win that third set, but lost some critical points to lose the last two games."

The Broncs close out the Fall season Saturday, when they play host to UC Irvine at 10 a.m.
