LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) and
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) both won at singles and doubles, but the Rider University women's tennis team was edged by St. Francis Brooklyn, 4-3, Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 3-6, while the Terriers are now 1-3.
The two teams split the two doubles flights contested, with Melendez and Garcia getting past Jean-Na Koo and Martina Radinovic, 7-6 (3), at No. 2. But the Broncs were playing with just five players, forfeited at No. 3 and the Terriers took the top flight and the doubles point for the 1-0 match lead.
The lead extended to 2-0 with a forfeit at No. 6 singles. The Broncs battled back with wins in three of the five singles flights contested. But the Terriers got the two wins they needed for the match victory. Melendez easily defeated Sheila Cetina, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2 and Garcia also got her double win with a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Runsi Patro at No. 3.
Sydney Jeffrey (Port St. Lucie, FL/Lincoln Park Academy) was also victorious at No. 5, 6-4, 7-5, against Radinovic.
"The team played extremely well," said Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay. "Sydney and Cyd played their best match this year. Angelica continues her winning ways."
The Broncs return to action Tuesday, when they play host to Wagner at 3 p.m.
