Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Outlasts Manhattan, Moves Into 1st Place Tie

Marshall, Scott post double-doubles

RIVERDALE, NY Frederick Scott (Munster, IN/Simeon [DePaul]) and Tyere Marshall (Philadelphia, PA/Martin Luther King/Putnam Science) both posted their fifth double-doubles of the season as the Rider University men's basketball team earned an 82-76 road win at Manhattan on Sunday night at Draddy Gym. With Rider's third-straight win, the Broncs (10-6, 3-1 MAAC) pull into a three-way tie for first in the MAAC with Canisius and Iona. Manhattan slips to 7-9 (2-2 MAAC) with the loss.

Rider trailed by as many as 11 points on five occasions in the second half. Manhattan closed out the first half with 11 of the final 13 points and opened the second with a pair of three's to open a double-digit lead. The advantage swelled to 11 on Zavier Turner's three at the 15:30 mark and remained 11 with just over 12 minutes left. But Rider scored the next seven points to cut the deficit to five and later went on a 9-1 run to take its first lead of the half on a Dimencio Vaughn (New York, NY/Calloway) bucket with 6:32 remaining. Tyrei Randall (Aurora, CO/St. Thomas More) scored five points in the spurt.

The lead changed hands twice in the next three minutes and Zane Waterman's two free throws with 1:07 remaining tied the game at 76-76. But Vaughn scored on a drive and was fouled, giving the lead back to Rider with 56 seconds left. Stevie Jordan (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan/API) got a steal on the other end and fed Scott for a fast-break dunk and a four-point lead. Rider then forced another two Manhattan misfires and Anthony Durham (Philadelphia, PA/Abington/Putnam Science) punctuated the victory with a fast-break lay-up.

Quotes & Notes
"Once we settled down and guys regained their composure, I thought we did a good job on attacking those guys, being aggressive and finishing at the basket where we didn't finish nearly enough in the first half."

"We just talked about not continuing to shoot threes when we had lay-up after lay-up at the basket."

"These guys battle. They compete. They're not going to back down from anybody. It's tough to win here. This place is difficult and Masiello's a good coach. He's got a great team and I thought our guys did a good job of taking it possession-by-possession and getting ourselves back in the game. Once we got the score tied, I felt we'd win the game." – Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett

"It all came down to rebounding, executing and just staying together as a team and lock in on defense."

"Offense will come. It wasn't such a great night for us, but we pushed it through with defense." – Sophomore Dimencio Vaughn
