Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls at Iona

Gaels snap Rider's four-game winning streak

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Sophomore point guard Stevie Jordan (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan/API) scored a team-high 14 points, but the Rider University men's basketball team fell at Iona, 91-64, Sunday afternoon at the Hynes Athletic Center. Jordan did all his damage in the game's first 17 minutes before leaving due to injury. With the loss, the Broncs slip to 11-7 (4-2 MAAC), while the Gaels improve to 11-7 (5-1 MAAC).

Rider went on a 10-0 run after Iona opened the game with a three and extended to a 10-point lead on a Jordan drive less than eight minutes in. But Dimencio Vaughn (New York, NY/Calloway), who'd scored 10 of Rider's first 18 points, picked up his second foul at the 7:33 mark and Jordan exited due to injury four minutes later. Iona outscored Rider, 31-17, the rest of the half to take a 44-40 lead into halftime.

Both teams shot the ball well in the opening 20 minutes, with Iona edging Rider, 57.7 percent (15-26) to 54.8 percent (17-31), including a 53.3 percent (8-15) to 44.4 percent (4-9) advantage from long range. Rider kept the game close in the early going of the second half. But while the Gaels eclipsed their first-half shooting percentage at 58.6 percent (17-29), the Broncs went cold (37.9 percent, 11-29), including just three made field goals in the game's final 11 minutes.

Quotes & Notes
"Give Iona a lot of credit. I thought they played well today. We didn't defend the three-point line and those guys did a good job making shots. It's one game. We'll rebound from it. Got to get Stevie healthy and we'll be fine. We played out of character in the second half. We didn't play like we're normally accustomed to playing. But things happen and we'll be fine."

"Our whole mentality is next man up. We're never going to, 'woe is me,' and worry about it. I love Stevie and I can't wait to have him back. But that's why you have other guys on the bench who are supposed to step up."  – Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett

"We just didn't do what we're supposed to do defensively and offensively we didn't get things to go our way. Like Coach said, we just played out of character and we'll bounce back next game." – Redshirt junior guard Anthony Durham
