Providence, RI – The Rider University volleyball team split a pair of matches on the first day of the 12th Annual Friar Classic hosted by Providence College on Friday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The Broncs (3-5) fell to the host Friars, 3-0, before blanking St. Francis Brooklyn, 3-0. Rider fell to Providence College by scores of 25-14, 25-13 and 25-14 and the Broncs took down the Terriers by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-19. Â
Junior
Hailey Riede (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley-Demarest) led the offensive attack for the Broncs against Providence College, recording eight kills and adding one block assist to account for 8.50 points. No other Bronc had more than three kills in the match. On the defensive side, sophomore
Rachelle Runyon (Aliso Viejo, CA/Aliso Niguel) had a team-high nine digs, while senior
Veronica Koval (Allentown, PA/Parkland) chipped in five digs and 18 assists. Â
In the nightcap, the Broncs had 32 kills as a team and took advantage of 29 St. Francis attack errors. Riede and classmate
Perry Williams (Portland, OR/Cleveland) each contributed seven kills apiece. At the net, sophomore
Evelyn Shanefield (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) had one solo block and three block assists, while freshman
Danielle Blanco (El Paso, TX/Franklin) added a team-best 11 digs.

"We are still finding our way a little," Rider Head Coach Chris Feliciano said. "It's nice to see a handful of players taking to heart some of the things we are working on at practice. Moving forward we still need to keep pushing each other not only to get better, but to operate within our system."
