Women's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw With Niagara

Iacono scores equalizer in 86th minute

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Senior forward Michelle Iacono (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) scored the equalizer in the 86th minute as the Rider University women's soccer team played Niagara to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon on Ben Cohen Field. With the tie, the Broncs move to 2-8-1 (2-2-1 MAAC), while the Purple Eagles are now 6-3-2 (2-1-1 MAAC).

Following a scoreless first half, the Purple Eagles broke through with a Kelsey Araujo goal off a one-on-one opportunity into the box with Broncs' freshman goalkeeper Carmen Carbonell (Valencia, Spain/Guadalaviar School). Courtney Betts passed it ahead to Araujo for the assist.

But the Broncs got the goal back in the 86th minute. Carbonell corralled the ball and punted it to the midfield stripe along the right sideline to Kourtney Cunningham (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall). The junior evaded a defender and played it ahead to Iacono who curled a shot from 25 yards out, right to left over Niagara goalkeeper Shania van Nuland for the equalizer.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the extra sessions as both teams came away with a point.

Quotes & Notes
"It feels like we lost and everyone is disappointed. But it's all the process of where we want to be. So, this game is only good for us. Having to go down a goal and showing the character to come back – you can't really recreate that in a training session. You have to be out there, you have to be on a must-win, you have to have the alumni here who you're trying to get the win for. The girls fought back great. I thought the character in the second half was fantastic. Arguably, if stats won the game, we would've won the game." – Rider Head Coach Drayson Hounsome
