TEANECK, NJ – Freshmen
Mathis Catanzaro (Montpellier, France/MHSC) and
Pablo DeCastro (Madrid, Spain) scored goals in the Rider University men's soccer team's 2-1 victory over nationally-ranked No. 21 Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday night. With the win, the Broncs' first over a ranked team in Head Coach
Charlie Inverso's seven-year tenure leading the team, Rider improves to 5-2-0, handing Fairleigh Dickinson (5-1-1) its first loss of the season.
After Rider senior goalkeeper
David Pastuna (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) saved a penalty kick in the 12
th minute, Catanzaro put back the rebound of a
Sergio Aguinaga (Madrid, Spain) shot to stake the Broncs to a 1-0 lead that it would hold at the half. With just over 20 minutes left in regulation, DeCastro similarly scored on the rebound of
Clement Bourret's (Orleans, France/Lycee Jean Giraudoux) shot off the crossbar.
The Knights made things interesting in the 88
th minute, as Jacob Labovitz headed in a Josh Schupack cross to cut the Broncs' lead to 2-1. But Rider defended out the final 145 seconds to secure the victory.
Quotes and Notes
"They're a quality team. They climbed into the national rankings. Good character win on the road and I thought we played well tonight. I don't think we've put together more than stretches of about 45-50 minutes of good soccer and I thought tonight we stretched that number to 75-80 minutes. One breakdown late in the game to allow them to get their first goal. But, for the most part, we were good tonight."
"Pastuna had a big save on the penalty kick and a couple of big saves in the first half. Santi Castro is a guy who sometimes doesn't get to play that much. But he came in and played almost a full 90 and was very good for us tonight. There's not one guy who didn't have a good game tonight."
