Women's Soccer Falls in Season Opener to Wagner, 2-1

Cunningham scores equalizer in 37th minute

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJKourtney Cunningham (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) scored the equalizer in the 37th minute, but the Rider University women's soccer team dropped its season opener to Wagner, 2-1, Wednesday night at Ben Cohen Field.

The Seahawks opened the scoring in the 21st minute, as Maria Nunez deposited the rebound of Mya Donnelly's saved shot. The Broncs pulled even on Cunningham's strong individual effort to beat Wagner keeper Katie Viscardi in the 37th minute. But Christine Letendre collected a header from Sandra Battista near the 18-yard box and beat Broncs goalkeeper Amy Kozlowski (Middletown, CT/Middletown) for what proved to be the game-winner in the 40th minute.

Quotes & Notes
"We did struggle in that first half. We gave them two goals. They were definitely errors. Forced errors by their pressing, but they were errors from our end. We scored a good goal, which was nice. I thought we looked dangerous when we attacked. We just turned the ball over a little bit too much and couldn't take advantage of the space that was there."

"In the second half, I thought we competed and battled really hard and showed good character, which is obviously at the end of the day the most important thing. If it hadn't been for a really good tackle at the last few seconds, I think Ellie would've equalized and made the crowd go crazy." – Rider Head Coach Drayson Hounsome

- The Broncs are now an even 3-3 in their last six season openers and an even 4-4-2 in home openers under Hounsome.
- Two goalkeepers shared duties in net, with Kozlowski playing for the first time since 2015 and Carmen Carbonell (Valencia, Spain/Guadalaviar School) making her collegiate debut. The duo take the spot vacated by matriculated four-year starter and current pro Bethany-May Howard.

Broncs By The Numbers
- The Broncs took a 15-12 edge in shots, but Wagner created more dangerous opportunities and took a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
- Cunningham's goal was the eighth of her Rider career. She tallied five goals as a freshman in 2015 and added a pair of goals last season.
- Cunningham took a team-high five shots for Rider, including three on target.
- Kozlowski and Carbonell each made three saves. An additional Wagner shot was cleared off the line by a Broncs back.
- Rider took seven corner kicks to the Seahawks' two.
- Six different Rider freshmen made their collegiate debuts.
