BALTIMORE, MD – Four Broncs won at both singles and doubles to lead the Rider University women's tennis team past Coppin State, 6-1, Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs even their record at 7-7, while the Eagles are now 1-6.
“Our doubles teams played extremely well together today,” said Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay. “Very confident and forced their opponent to make mistakes. Caitlin battled back from losing the first set and steadied up her game and attacked her opponent when given opportunity.”
The Broncs took two of three doubles flights to take the first point of the match.
Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) and
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) defeated Tanna Nita and Precious Udofe, 6-2 at No. 1, while Danielle (Scrudato Califon, NJ/Voorhees) and
Kelli Swanson (Wenonah, NJ/GCIT [Rowan]) took a 6-3 victory at No. 3 over Brittanie Cahua and Ajla Hrnjic to clinch the point.
Rider quickly clinched the match with straight-sets victories at Nos. 1, 2 and 5 by Canda, Melendez and Scrudato, with each losing no more than one game in the match. Swanson also earned a straight-sets victory, while
Caitlin Gardner (Fishers, IN/Fishers) pulled out a three-set victory over Carentxa Goede in a third-set tie-breaker.
The Broncs return to action Friday, when they play host to La Salle. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
