LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Five Rider University women's tennis players won at both singles and doubles as the Broncs overpowered hOURglass rival Saint Peter's, 6-1, Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs close out the season at 8-11 (2-5 MAAC), while the Peacocks move to 2-16 (0-5 MAAC).
The Broncs took three convincing doubles victories to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) and
Caitlin Gardner (Fishers, IN/Fishers) made quick work of Claudia Hellman and Azuri Hughes, 6-0, at No. 2, before
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) and
Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) took a 6-3 victory over Lucia Radovic and Elena Melian Puigventos at No. 1 doubles.
Danielle Scrudato (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) and
Kelli Swanson (Wenonah, NJ/GCIT (Rowan)] also earned a 6-3 win over Stephanie Falcon and Aidah Muhammad at No. 3 doubles.
Scrudato breezed to a 6-0, 6-0, win at No. 5 singles over Christian Resurreccion, while Melendez similarly made quick work of Puigventos, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2. Binder defeated Falcon, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 and Swanson took a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Muhammad as the Broncs wrapped up the victory. Gardner battled to finish off Hellman at No. 3, 7-5, 6-4. The Peacocks' lone point of the match came at No. 1, with Radovic pulling out a 6-4, 6-3, victory over Canda.
“The women played extremely well today in both singles and doubles,” said Rider Head Coach
Doug Potkay. “Playing in her last match, Kelli clinched the doubles point with Danielle and won her singles match. It was a great way to end the season with a conference win. The player trained hard all season.”
