LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) won at both singles and doubles, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell to The College of New Jersey, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs slip to 7-9, while the Lions are now 11-2. 

Melendez paired with Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) to defeat Maddy Stoner and Danna Tsay, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Melendez then got past Brittany Reedman, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. But the Lions won the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3, while winning the remaining five singles flights, all in straight sets. 

“Vanessa and Cyd served well and controlled the net in doubles,” said Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay. “Cyd beat a highly-ranked college player in singles. She served smart, pushed her opponent off the court and attacked short shots. I was disappointed that we didn't win our doubles point to get the momentum going into our singles matches.”

The Broncs return to action Friday, when they play host to Niagara. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
