PHILADELPHIA – Temple won all three doubles flights and all six singles flights to take a 7-0 victory over the Rider University women's tennis team Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 7-8 on the season, while the Owls improve to 10-11.
“The doubles points and games were very close against a very tough opponent,” said Rider Head Coach
Doug Potkay. “I'm proud of the way we played doubles. They attacked the net and neutralized Temple's aggressive style. Kelli, Cyd and Vanessa battled and had chances to win more games.”
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) and
Caitlin Gardner (Fishers, IN/Fishers) played the closest doubles match, falling at No. 2 to Monet Stuckey-Willis and Mariana Bedon, 6-3.
Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) and
Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) also fell to Alina Abdurakhimova and Yana Khon, 6-2, at No. 1 as the Owls took the doubles point.
The Owls rolled in straight sets through all six singles flights. Canda and Melendez took the most games of all the Broncs, with both players falling, 6-1, 6-2, at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.
The Broncs return to action Tuesday, when they play host to TCNJ. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
