Men's Basketball Stuns Penn State, 71-70

Frederick Scott hits buzzer-beating, game-winning three

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA Frederick Scott (Munster, IN/Simeon [DePaul]) hit the game-winning three-pointer from the right wing as time expired to give the Rider University men's basketball team a 71-70 win at Penn State Friday night. With the win, the Broncs close out non-conference play at 7-5, while the Nittany Lions slip to 10-4.

Scott scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and added nine rebounds. Dimencio Vaughn (New York, NY/Calloway) scored a team-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and added seven rebounds, while Tyere Marshall (Philadelphia, PA/Martin Luther King/Putnam Science) chipped in with 15 points. Stevie Jordan (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan/API) also had 12 points and seven assists.

The Broncs trailed by as many as 10 points twice in the second half. The Broncs went on an 8-0 run with threes from Anthony Durham (Philadelphia, PA/Abington/Putnam Science) and Vaughn and a thunderous Vaughn dunk giving Rider its first lead of the half, 57-56, with 8:26 remaining. Penn State rebuilt a six-point lead twice, but the Broncs wouldn't go away. A Scott three-point play, lay-up and two free throws consecutively accounted for a one-man 7-0 run and put Rider back in front with 1:23 remaining.

Again Penn State would rebuild a lead with Lamar Stevens banking in a floater hard off glass and Shep Garner hitting his sixth three-pointer of the game to give the Nittany Lions a 70-66 lead with 22 seconds remaining. Jordan got inside for a floater with 14 seconds remaining, before the Broncs fouled Stevens with 8.2 seconds remaining. He missed both free-throw attempts, leaving the door open. Scott got the look from the right wing and hit the bottom of the net.

Quotes & Notes
"I can't be happier for our guys and going into conference play, this is a huge win for us."

"I'll tell you what. Just the fact that our guys were attacking – you saw the drive by Dimencio Vaughn downhill to dunk on those guys. These guys are competitors. We lost our way for a minute, but we're back."

"Give credit to our former Penn State player, Ben Luber, who did an awesome job on the scout."  – Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett

"I just had confidence. My coaches, my players, everybody was counting on me. So I shot it with confidence." – Redshirt freshman Frederick Scott

- The Rider win was the first over a high major since a Nov. 17, 2010, victory at the University of Southern California and the Broncs' first over a Big 10 program in a decade.
