Women's Basketball Races Past NJIT on Saturday

The Broncs defeated the Highlanders, 79-64, in Newark

Newark, NJ – Three Rider University women's basketball players scored in double figures led by redshirt sophomore forward Lea Favre (Vevey, Switzerland/Lycee Jeanne D'Arc) as the Broncs defeated NJIT, 79-64, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at the NJIT Wellness and Events Center.

Favre was a force in the post all afternoon for Rider, pouring in a career-high 22 points thanks to knocking down 8-of-10 from the field. She also was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.

The Broncs (3-7) have now won three of their last four after taking their final road non-conference game of the season, while the Highlanders (1-11) are now 1-4 in front of their home crowd this year.

Rider got off to a hot start offensively, knocking down 5-of-7 over the first four-plus minutes of play to build a five-point edge at 10-5. In the first quarter, the Broncs shot over 71 percent from the field (10-of-14) and forced six turnovers to hold a 14-point advantage at 23-9. Hoskova had a strong first quarter for the second game in a row, scoring 10 points and grabbing four rebounds on 4-of-5 shooting from the field.

After struggling to start the second quarter, the Broncs ended the opening half on a 8-1 run over the final 2:12 to stretch the lead back to 14 at 37-23 heading into the half.

NJIT outscored Rider, 22-15, in the third quarter to cut the deficit to just seven at 52-45 heading into the final 10 minutes of action. The Broncs would answer back by starting the fourth quarter on 12-3 run over the first 4:30 of the frame to stretch the lead back to double figures.

Offensively, senior Kamila Hoskova (Brno, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium Ludvika Danka) and sophomore Stella Johnson (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic) were both also in double figures for the Broncs. Hoskova had 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Johnson netted 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Off the bench, freshman Jaiden Morris (Richmond, VA/Monacan) sophomore Lexi Stover (Malvern, PA/ Archbishop Carrol) combined for 14 points.

- Rider is now 2-1 all-time against NJIT. The road team has won all three meetings in the series history.
- The 79 points scored by the broncs were a season-high.
- Rider shot over 59 percent from the field on the day (28-47). The Broncs also outscored the Highlanders, 42-26, in the paint.

BRONCS BY THE NUMBERS
- Hoskova has scored in double figures a team-high nine times. She also chipped in six rebounds, six assists, two steals and one block. Her six assists were a new career-high. She also hit 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Over the last four-plus games, Hoskova has hit 25 consecutive from the charity stripe.
- Stella Johnson also added three rebounds and three steals. Johnson hit all four of her free-throw attempts. She's had three or more steals in four straight games for the Broncs.
- Junior point guard Lexi Posset had four assists for Rider. She's had four or more assists in five consecutive games.
- Favre scored in double figures for the second time in her career with the Broncs. Her ?? field goals made were also a new career-high.
- Aubre Johnson scored four points, grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and had a career-high three assists.  

UP NEXT
Rider returns home to close out non-conference play on Thursday, December 21, against Binghamton at 7:00 pm inside Alumni Gym. The meeting is the first between the Bearcats and the Broncs since the 2014-15 campaign. Rider has won two of its last three games against Binghamton. The contest is the first of three straight home games for the Broncs and will feature live stat as well as audio and video feeds.
