LAS VEGAS, NV – Five Broncs finished in double figures and
Stevie Jordan (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan/API) posted his fourth-career double-double as the Rider University men's basketball team defeated Hampton, 94-80, in the Las Vegas Invitational Upper Division Championship Game Friday night at Orleans Arena. With the win, the Broncs' fourth-straight, Rider improves to 5-1. Hampton slips to 2-5 with their second loss of the season to Rider following a season-opening 90-75 Broncs' victory.
After Rider built a lead of as many as eight in the early going, Hampton outscored Rider, 21-5, later in the first half to establish a 10-point lead. But the Broncs countered with 14 of the final 19 points in the half to whittle the deficit down to one, 42-41, at the halftime break.
The Broncs immediately tied the game on a Jordan free throw off their opening possession of the second half and, after Hampton retook the lead on the next trip down court, Rider got a
Frederick Scott (Munster, IN/Simeon [DePaul]) dunk and a
Dimencio Vaughn (New York, NY/Calloway) lay-up to take the lead for good as part of a 9-0 run. The lead swelled to as many as 14 points, the final margin of victory, on
Jordan Allen's (Dover, DE/Dover) fourth three-point field goal of the game with the shot clock running down and 22 seconds left in regulation.
Quotes & Notes
"(Hampton) really got after us and they knocked us on our heels for a minute and it took us a minute to regroup. Once we started to regroup, I just felt like the game would be ours and once we got the lead down to one down at half. Our guys knew how bad we played. And I said to them, 'Fellas, we were tied at half last time we played them at our place and we came back and ended up winning by 15. So here we are again.' So give these guys credit. We struggled. We're tired. But yet, we had a good time and I'm glad that they won. I'm happy for these guys."
"(
Dimencio Vaughn) was out all year long and for him to get as good as he's getting, which we knew it was a big blow when we lost him last year. He's our alpha dog. He's our energy guy. He's going to go out and guard the other team's best player, night in and night out. He's going to get after guys. When you've got him and Stevie in there, it's an added bonus. I thought he really set the tone for us."
